Thanks Mike! I certainly get your point and agree to a large extent. That end battle does go on for too long, but then so do most Marvel movie finales. It’s a consistent trend for them, along with underwhelming villains. Fortunately, I was so involved in the father-son relationship and the stakes of the film that, even though the ending carried on and on, I was entertained because they at least corrected the villain issue. Russell certainly brings a lot to his roles, particularly Ego, because like Quill, we want Ego’s charm to matched with goodness. It’s a genius bit of casting because people like me, who grew up watching Russell and loving his work, want to see him in heroic roles. So when Ego reveals his true drives, it hurts. But then, Russell has proved in recent years with “Death Proof” and “The Hateful Eight” that he’s great at using his charm in more complex ways. Though, all the charm in the world couldn’t make me interested in “The Fate of the Furious.”

Brian. I felt like the rating lost an extra one-half star by extending the battle with Ego far too long. Gunn could have easily trimmed at least 5 minutes without losing the integrity or character of the scene, in my opinion. Maybe that’s quibbling, because the movie was outstanding, but carried with it far higher expectations than the original. Whether he’s appearing as Ego or Mr. Nobody (interesting juxtaposition of names), Kurt Russell dominates his scenes, yet provides tremendous support to the actors around him. It was fun to see Stallone, and he came off great without any prosthetics or oddball skin colors to get in his way, unlike Gunn’s friend Michael Rosenbaum. Can’t wait for Vol. 3.
